Instead of gold, Castle Rock, Colorado, real estate owes its existence to rich deposits of pinkish-gray, volcanic stone in the mesas surrounding the city. Settlers began quarrying rhyolite in the early 1870s. It wasn't long before the granite-like material attracted the railroad to Castle Rock, which built its first depot from the pretty stone and promptly began shipping rhyolite by rail.
Rhyolite also helped build the fortress-like butte at the north end of the city, which gives the area its name and is referred to as "the rock" by locals. Hikers can reach the top of the mesa via the steep, 1.4-mile Rock Park trail. Rhyolite mining is still an important part of the local economy.
Castle Rock properties in the 33-square-mile city and surrounding unincorporated neighborhoods are popular for their natural setting where wildlife sightings are common.
Local amenities include an 84,000-square-foot recreation center, participation in the highly rated Douglas County School District and the large Philip S. Miller Library, which is home to the innovative Douglas County Libraries system. Castle Rock residents enjoy a wide range of programs at the Miller Library from author talks to summer concerts.
Castle Rock homes come with an award-winning open space and park system. The city owns about 2,250 acres of open space, 51 miles of trails and 19 developed parks including the 174-acre Rhyolite Regional Park offering picnic facilities, an inline skating rink, and a mile-long, downhill bike track.
