Wheat Ridge is centrally located between Lakewood and North Denver.
Bordered on the north by I-70, Wheat Ridge offers rapid access to skiing, hiking, camping and other outdoor adventures in the Rocky Mountains.
A former agricultural town, Wheat Ridge was named for its golden ridges of wheat that fed miners and pioneers beginning during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush of 1859. In time, wheat fields gave way to orchards. However, by the mid-20th century, greenhouses filled with spicy, world-famous carnations replaced the orchards. In 1969, when Wheat Ridge finally incorporated, the city also initiated the annual Carnation Festival to celebrate its agricultural history.
Wheat Ridge is served by the highly regarded Jefferson County Public School District and has its own branch of the Jefferson County Library.
The city's 430 acres of parks and open space include a recreation center for all ages as well as the Active Adult Center aimed at residents age 50 and over.
